East St. Louis Laying Off Firefighters and Police Officers

The next time you call 911 in East St. Louis, you may not get a response as quick as you might expect. Two weeks ago, public service workers in St. Louis were given notice that they would no longer have a job come August first.

Nineteen police officers and eleven firefighters will be out of a job as of Sunday. According to St. Louis mayor Alvin Parks, Jr., a total of thirty-seven city employees are being laid off. The layoffs were passed by a 3-2 vote during a July 31 East St. Louis City Council meeting. Officials made the decision in order to circumvent a loss of state funding from the Financial Advisory Authority.

St. Louis Reinvents Itself to Become Resillient in Recession

St. Louis has experienced some major changes as a result of the recession, like every other city in the US.  Its unemployment rate is similar to the national average, and has steadily risen in the face of economic downturn and turmoil.  The city is a major port along the Mississippi River and offers the country a convenient, centrally-located transportation and trade hub.  There are also strong government employment and manufacturing sectors here as well.  Interestingly St. Louis has worked hard over the past decade to attract new business and companies to headquarter there.  The city has been successful in creating a more diverse, modernized economy that showcases a strong medical services and healthcare employment sector.

The St. Louis area has been an economic hub for transportation and shipping for nearly two centuries.  Its location in the center of the US on the Mississippi river gives it some unique geographical and strategic advantages.  Scott Air Force Base is located here as well as numerous Fortune 500 companies’ headquarters.  St. Louis has also traditionally been the home of many of the manufacturing plants for the US auto industry, although recently these plants have closed and the manufacturing sector of St. Louis has taken it on the chin.  Not only has the manufacturing sector really been hurt, but all other sectors save two have shed jobs by the thousands.St. LouisSt. Louis

When you’re searching for a job following high school, nursing always comes up, and for a good reason: we’ll always need nurses. It’s that simple. Until a robot can adequately find a vein, soothe a patient, and crack a joke while holding a sick basin, nurses will continue to be needed.
